I use a number of names on this site for myself. The first name I used on line was Arafel. It is an ancient Celtic word meaning the same as my real name, Joy. It is also very popular due to a book by C. J. Cherryh, in which the main character is the last remaining elf, named Arafel. Because the name was so popular on the net, I found I was often having to come up with alternatives, and began using older versions of the same word. These include Aoibhel, Avel, and Aovel. For a time I was a contributing editor to a fantasy based "in character" newspaper for AD&D Planescapes. Lady Avel became the character I used as a fantasy collector of information for that paper, and Arafel became her roving reporter. Aoibhel became my most frequently used on line name for quite some time, in spite of frequent complaints that it is hard to spell. Then I became involved in Dark Age of Camelot, the online fantasy role-playing game. One of my characters in that game, a Norse warrrioress, I named Verijaa. It is a name I created from Norwegian terms meaning Bloodice. (Read her story, you will see why the name is so appropriate for her!) In any case, I like the way the name sounds, and have begun using it more and more on the net. Although unusual, it is easier to spell than Aoibhel, so when it came time to choose a domain name, that is what I went with. If you have further questions, feel free to email me! Thanks, Joy |
